Our MELTZ fanz have spoken. Only available for a limited time now, the MUFFULETTA will be the next to take a sabbatical…
The MUFFULETTA is a beloved New Orleans-born creation. It originated in 1906 when local Sicilian farmers would visit Salvatore Lupo’s grocery store for their lunch. They would purchase sliced meats, cheese, and olive salad. In true Sicilian fashion, they would eat these items separately. It was Salvatore himself that suggested they slice bread in half and eat their ingredients sandwich style.
The olive salad classically consisted of celery, carrots, cauliflower, green olives, oregano, and garlic, marinated at least 24 hours. The soft bread was identified by the toasted sesame seeds on top. The MUFFULETTA is traditionally served cold or at room temperature.
MELTZ is not known to mess with a good thing. We simply look for a respectful way to put our “extreme twist” on culinary fare. This is our latest effort toward that cause. We hope you enjoy what our “culinary mad scientist” has created.
MUFFULETTA: Provolone, Mozzarella, Jack, Salami, Pepperoni, Tasso Ham, Cobb-Smoked Ham, Cappicola, Toasted Sesame Seeds, Spicy Sweet Pepper-Green Olive Antipasti.
By the way, the infamous Central Grocery pronunciation is [moo-foo-LET-ta]. Another local variation is [muff-uh-LOT-uh].
However you choose to pronounce it, we know what you mean, and do we ever have a delicious MELTZ version for you.
